Frequently asked questions about batteries for two-way radios

The battery life depends on several factors: the type of battery (e.g. Li-ion, NiMH), the capacity (in mAh or Wh), the radio’s power consumption (transmission time vs. standby) and environmental conditions such as temperature. In user manuals for radio devices, you will often find specifications such as ‘up to 16 hours in active everyday use’ or ‘several days in standby mode’.
This is problematic. Even if the voltage and connector match, internal parameters (cell chemistry, BMS, protection circuits) may differ. A battery without the correct protection circuitry can interfere with the charging electronics or cause damage. It is always better to use compatible batteries or those recommended by the manufacturer.
A radio battery should be replaced if it shows certain signs of wear and tear. Typical signs include a significantly shorter runtime than usual, or the device reporting a low battery very quickly despite being fully charged. If the battery becomes unusually hot whilst charging, or if the charge indicator flickers or is unreliable, this is also a sign of deteriorating quality. In some cases, the radio cannot be switched on at all, even though the battery is charged – this too indicates that a replacement is necessary.
Radio batteries should always be charged using a charger that is precisely matched to the voltage, current and battery type. Continuous charging should be avoided; it is therefore advisable to remove the battery from the charging cradle once it is fully charged. Ambient temperature also plays an important role: ideally, charging should take place at moderate temperatures and not in extreme cold or heat. To extend the battery’s service life, it is advisable to keep charging cycles moderate and not to fully charge the battery to 100% at every opportunity. Many two-way radios also feature charge indicators, LED signals or warning tones that indicate when the battery should be recharged – these indicators should be heeded at all times.
Yes, if the charging current (or power) exceeds what the battery or the charging electronics can handle, this can lead to overheating or cell damage. That is why a precisely matched or intelligently controlled charger is particularly important.
Deep discharge means that a battery is discharged below a critical voltage, which can cause permanent damage to the cell. Many two-way radios and battery management systems issue a warning via an LED indicator or an audible alert when the battery level becomes critically low. Pay attention to such warning signals and recharge the battery in good time to prevent deep discharge.
Regular calibration is not necessary for modern lithium-ion batteries. However, it may be advisable if the radio’s charge indicator displays inaccurate readings or the device switches off prematurely. In this case, a controlled calibration can help: the battery is discharged almost completely and then fully recharged. It is important to avoid deep discharge – in other words, to charge the battery in good time before the voltage drops into a critical range. Such calibration should only be carried out occasionally and does not replace regular maintenance or the timely replacement of worn-out batteries.
