Frequently asked questions about speaker microphones
A speakerphone combines a loudspeaker and a microphone in a single compact device. It allows the user to speak and listen via a radio without having to hold it in their hand. This keeps the user mobile and enables them to react quickly – ideal for security services, construction sites, rescue operations or industrial environments.
Not every speaker microphone is compatible with every radio. Compatibility depends on the pin configuration, the signal routing and, where applicable, the manufacturer’s code. However, many models are designed to work with multiple devices or can be adapted using adapters. It is important to check the manufacturer’s compatibility specifications before connecting a new microphone.
The volume of a speaker microphone can vary considerably depending on the model and the environment. High-quality models offer clear, loud sound that remains intelligible even in noisy environments. Some models feature a volume control directly on the microphone housing.
PTT stands for ‘Push-to-Talk’ – a button used to activate voice transmission. As long as it is pressed, the microphone transmits. This technology prevents background noise from being transmitted continuously and ensures clear, targeted communication.
Clean the microphone regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Ensure that no moisture enters the speaker or microphone openings. When using the device outdoors, it is advisable to check the connectors occasionally for dust, sand or corrosion.
Many models are splash-proof and certified to IP protection ratings (e.g. IP54 or IP65). Fully waterproof models are less common and should only be used in situations where constant contact with water cannot be ruled out.
It is advisable to replace the unit if the call quality deteriorates significantly, the PTT button is stiff, or there are broken cables. Visible damage to the casing or corrosion on the connectors are also clear signs of wear and tear.
